When castings are impregnated the porosity network that represents potential leak paths is filled and permanently sealed. Finishing operations such as plating and painting can be enhanced by filling porosity. This eliminates absorption of plating chemicals that can leak through finishes and cause blistering, peeling and discolouration.
In a typical powdered metal part, as much as 15% of the part volume may be air space in the internal network. Loctite's impregnation process completely fills this network and makes the part capable of retaining pressure up to the parts burst strength.
By filling voids machining properties vastly improve. Dimensional tolerances become more consistent, and tool life is greatly extended, reducing cost. |
