Oil Seals for 100 Bar

Seals that withstand oil pressure of 100 bar (1500 psi) in linear and rotary motion hydraulic systems have been added to the range of specialist products developed by Blue Diamond. Externally they have the appearance of ordinary encased metal rotary shaft seals. Design changes to the main sealing lip and case have improved performance in applications where pressure sealing is required. Additionally, seals can be supplied with stainless steel cases or with specially developed abrasion resistant nitrile moulded lips. Seals operating at these pressures need to have specific tight interference fits on the housing or bore to avoid any external leak path.

Current principal areas of application envisaged include hydraulic motors, actuators and gearboxes, power steering systems, shock absorbers, motorcycle forks and applications where oil is under continuous or intermittent high pressure above 1 bar. Seals can be specifically designed for linear motion or reciprocating shafts. For instance motorcycle forks, where care must be taken in the design of the seal to avoid the main lip inverting during reverse stroke.

Of the three types, SCN1 has a standard profile with modified lip angles working at pressure up to 100 bar. Broadly similar type TCN1 features a wiper lip to protect the main sealing lip from damage which might be caused by contamination on the shaft. Type CNB has an integral polyurethane ring which, by reducing the extrusion gap through which the main seal lip could be extruded, gives the seal even greater stability under high pressure.
